Two manatees that have been cared for at SeaWorld Orlando since early last year were released into a side canal off of the Banana River Tuesday.

Both of the manatees were rescued due to cold stress. Mud Puppy, a 765-pound manatee, was rescued from the Indian River in Indialantic, Fla. in January 2011 and Bodacious, an 800-pound manatee was rescued from the San Sebastian River in Sebastian, Fla. in February of 2011.

Both animals were tagged with transponders by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, who will continue to monitor them. Should they need to be rescued again, they will have a way to identify each animal. SeaWorld’s animal care team states that the animals are healthy and active, and that the release was successful.

During their time at SeaWorld Orlando, the animals received supportive care with antibiotic treatments and were tube-fed fluids to keep them hydrated. During the rest of their rehabilitation, the manatees were well fed and monitored until their release.
