Pilot whale continues rehab at SeaWorld Orlando

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - One of the two female pilot whales stranded in early May near Cudjoe Key in the lower Florida Keys continues its recovery at SeaWorld Orlando.

The whale, named 300, has scoliosis, or curvature of the spine. Animal experts at SeaWorld Orlando are treating her with physical therapy which includes stretching the whale’s muscles and working her tail fluke up and down.

SeaWorld Orlando says the curvature developed approximately 5 weeks after her rescue and has created a sharp angle in the whale’s spine that prevents her from swimming normally. SeaWorld animal experts have determined the muscular curvature is severe and multiple levels of assessment are being conducted to determine the whale’s quality of life. It’s hoped the therapy sessions will allow her to regain proper and more normal use of her tail.

Deemed unable to be released by the National Marine Fisheries Service, the 12-foot-long whale will make a permanent home at SeaWorld Orlando.
