Some fear the dentist but it can be just as scary for those that need the care and can't afford it. To meet the growing need in the community, a church and volunteers have opened a new free dental clinic in west Volusia County.
Good Samaritan Dental Clinic in Orange City opened two weeks ago and there's already a waiting list.
Dentists, nurses, and staff donate 100% of their time to run the free clinic for a few hours three days a week.
Father Tom Connery of St. Peter Catholic Church in DeLand started a free health clinic, but after talking to patients, realized that many never saw a dentist and needed urgent care. "This is call, a need, and God will provide," said Father Tom.
Patients need to be adults and meet income requirements to show a need. After getting a couple cavities filled, Susan Sills was grateful. "It was just good to know you have a safe place to go and you dont have to feel ashamed because you cant afford it."
Dr. Michael Kelly helped open the free dental clinic on September 14th and donates his time. "We're here to use the talents weve been blessed with to help others and thats a great feeling."
