Potential swine flu case

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - On Tuesday the City of Port Orange was notified that an 8-year-old child in the City of Port Oranges summer program at Silver Sands Middle School has a potential case of the H1N1 swine flu virus. The City and the School Board are taking all necessary precautions to disinfect the school as well as providing many opportunities to wash hands and use hand sanitizer.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

Flu Prevention Tips:

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue in the trash.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleansers are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are spread that way.
• Stay at home if you’re sick.
• Contact your doctor if you have fever and flu symptoms.

If you think you have an influenza-like illness defined as a fever of 100 degrees or higher, cough, or sore throat, please call your health care provider and discuss whether you need to be seen in his/her office or emergency room or stay at home.
