DELTONA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Janice Rivera says her life will never be the same.
"I use to draw fashion and stuff. I was right-handed, and now I cant do that. I use to dress myself do my own stuff, and now I have to depend on my mom to help me."
Her arm was severed during an accident on the SR 417 back in August. The Florida Highway Patrol says Rivera's best friend, the driver of the car, was at fault. Although DUI charges are pending, Rivera, 20, admits that they had been drinking the alcoholic energy drink Four Loko that night.
"It didn't look like she was drunk," Rivera said of her friend when she got behind the wheel. "She was perfectly fine to me."
"The caffeine (contained in Four Loko) prohibits the person who's drinking it to understand how intoxicated they are. Four Loko is equivalent to 4 beers as well as 2 energy drinks," said William McBride, Rivera's attorney.
The 20 year old is now suing the beverage company and her best friend who is also underage. When asked if she should have taken any responsibility for having gotten in the car, Rivera replied, "No."
"It's being marketed to the young drinker to the young person and when you mix youth and inexperience with a dangerous drink like this, this is why we are very concerned about," McBride said.
Rivera says her 20-year-old friend went to a Deltona convenience store to purchase the drink. That store is also being sued by Rivera.
