(WOFL FOX 35) - FOX 35 talked to Marty Coolican, VP of Operations for Pet Paradise Resort.
1. Get to the vet. Before you hit the road to travel with your pet, make sure you visit with your veterinarian. This will ensure that your pet has a clean bill of health and is up to date with all the proper vaccinations so your pet can enjoy their vacation too! Most lodging places require certain up to date vaccinations, so make sure to check with your hotel ahead of time.
2. Identification. Your dog should always have a sturdy collar with home address and telephone number on a tag. To protect him while traveling, tape your local contact information or your cell phone number onto the tag before leaving, or get a second tag. Another great form of identification is getting your pet microchipped.
3. Plan ahead for your pet! Just like you, pets like the comforts of home. Make a travel package for them with the following items to ensure they are comfortable and happy during their vacation:
• Their favorite bed
• Toys
• Leash & Collar
• Brush
• Their own dishes
• Treats
• Food
• Bottle water
• Waste bags
• Copy of Medical records
4. Take frequent breaks. Your pet needs water, exercise and potty breaks at regular intervals, so make sure you make stopping points along your trip. This will help your pet remain calm and relaxed throughout the trip. Also, if possible make sure your pet is wearing a pet seat belt and they are never left in the car alone, even for short periods of time.
