New discovery in Casey Anthony case

MyFox Orlando Report

New discovery has been released in the case against Casey Anthony.

FBI Crime Lab Reports

Duct tape product specification report

Orange County Sheriff's office investigative documents

Transcript of interview with Annie Downing conducted January 6, 2009

The discovery information includes forensic reports from the FBI lab in Quantico, Va., the same lab that confirmed the identity of her daughter Caylee's remains.

Anthony has pleaded not guilty on charges that she killed her daughter, 2-year-old Caylee Marie, claiming a babysitter kidnapped her toddler. Caylee was last seen in June 2008, but she was not reported missing until a month later. Her remains were found in woods near the family's home in December.

Casey Anthony’s trial is expected to start next year.

Included in the documents released are FBI e-mails regarding a photograph taken of the trunk of Casey Anthony’s car.

In an e-mail written by FBI Intelligance Analyst Karen B. Cowan to FBI Agent Erin O. Martin, Cowan says, “A very interesting photo exists of the trunk liner, which you have, which highlights the very large stain. If you look closely at this photo, there appears to be the outline of silhouette of a child in the fetal position. You can make out what may be the back, bottom, and legs most clearly.”

Cowan says the print of the photo taken in Casey Anthony's white Pontiac "does not do it justice at all"

Cowan advises her colleague to look at it on a computer and manipulate the shading, saying it enhanced the image a bit.

An FBI photo technologist writes back the next day. He warns he would note that "although we may be able to draw conclusions about whether marks represent impressions or stains, for example, we do not report conclusions what may or may not have left any marks or impressions in cases like this - it is too speculative. Others can draw their own conclusions... "

The photos were not released by as part of the discovery but prosecutors could use them later at the trial.

Duct tape contaminiation
Duct tape found on the mouth of Caylee was contaminated by an FBI evidence examiner, raising questions about how it will be used in prosecuting Casey Anthony.

A February 3 e-mail sent from one FBI lab technician to another saying they processed the duct tape recovered on caylee Anthony’s remains and it seems there is a problem: DNA on one of the pieces of duct tape that the FBI cannot identify.

They say it does not belong to the victim caylee her mother Casey or her grandmother Cindy Anthony. All they know is that it came from a female. So the FBI traced down every female FBI agent who would have come in to contact with the duct tape. They cross checked their DNA profiles with what was found on the duct tape. On February 9 an email reveals the evidence had been tainted. The mystery DNA found on that duct tape belongs to FBI agent Lorie gettesman. The email reads, "We obtained the results for her profile and determined it was her DNA profile on the duct tape.”

Another piece of potential evidence now in question: a hair found in the trunk of Casey Anthony’s car. For months investigators have said it has a "death band" on it but an email from August of 2008 an FBI tech from the trace evidence unit said, “I can't say absolutely the hair came from a dead body but it is consistent. The tech also says the hair is microscopically similar hair on Caylee Anthony’s brush.
