VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - After a busy day of beach rescues Friday, Volusia County lifeguards made 83 rescues Saturday, pulling a total of 202 total victims out of the choppy waters. As of 3:45 p.m., there were no serious injuries reported.
The Volusia County Beach Patrol is warning swimmers of rip currents and rough tide. On Friday alone, lifeguards pulled between 150 and 175 people out of the water just north Daytona Beach. The average day requires about a dozen rescues.
Officials have reported waves in excess of 3 feet, off shore wind and tide which was “right for rips.”
At two people rescued had to be treated with oxygen, due to exhaustion. A fisherman in New Smyrna Beach fell off the rocks onto the jetties and broke a leg. He was transported to Bert Fish Medical Center.
"It will continue the next few days,” said Scott Petersohn with the Beach Patrol. “The weekend will be very busy."
Officials are asking that beach goers listen to lifeguards and use common sense.
