A 12-year-old boy was killed and two other kids were injured in an off-road vehicle accident Saturday morning. It happened at 11:10 a.m. at 3141 Aspen Rd.
A homeowner in the area was the one who reported the crash involving the three juveniles. It turns out the vehicle they were in was a makeshift go-cart.
The homeowner witnessed the crash and immediately went to render aid to the victims by bringing them to his home and calling 9-1-1. When Palm Bay Fire-Rescue paramedics arrived at the home they learned the three victims had been thrown from the vehicle.
All the victims were conscious and alert, with no visible injuries, but there were possible internal injuries, so all three victims were taken to the hospital. The 12-year-old male identified as Charlie Hall, was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center after paramedics suspected serious internal injuries.
That's where Hall was later pronounced dead as a result of his injuries. The two others, a 16 year-old male identified as Christopher Powell, and a 15-year-old female identified as Nitira Bazemore were treated for minor injuries.
Police Traffic Homicide Investigators responded to the scene and began to reconstruct the crash. Preliminary findings indicate the driver, identified as Powell, was traveling approximately 30-miles per hour along a dirt path between Aspen Rd. and Halblum Ave. when he lost control.
According to witnesses Powell was attempting to avoid a large hole in the path and slammed the brakes on the vehicle causing the vehicle to flip. All the passengers were ejected when the vehicle flipped from the rear.
Hall was standing on a support beam in the rear of the vehicle and was thrown approximately 15 feet. "He was up and walking around when they called to report the incident," said Traffic Homicide Investigator Jennifer Cordeau, but on the way to the hospital the boy went into cardiac arrest and he could not be revived.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
