OVIEDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - An Oviedo home was destroyed by fire which was sparked by lightning on Tuesday evening. The family living in the Bentley Cove home ran out of the house in a panic and yelling, according to neighbor Al Ducharme. He added that they jumped into their car took off before firefighters even arrived.
"We heard a noise, then saw smoke and flames,” said neighbor Brian Button. “I was as sad as I was in awe, as I watched it." Button happened to have his camera with him and began taking video and pictures.
Firefighters said the lightning struck the roof and flames quickly engulfed the attic. Greg Kirby, with the Seminole County Fire Department, said, "I expect the home to be a total loss."
For hours, firefighters battled the blaze and residual hotspots. Eventually, two adults from the home returned and talked with Kirby.
They appeared to be fine, but firefighters wouldn't say much more than that...just that the family was very distraught.
