The live-in boyfriend of a central Florida assistant public defender has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for fatally shooting the woman.

Andrew Conley pleaded no contest to manslaughter Monday and was sentenced immediately after that.

The 38-year-old man had told Seminole County deputies that he was showing the .22-caliber handgun to his girlfriend, 51-year-old Theresa Anderson, when it went off and hit her in the chest.

Prosecutors say Conley had been up all night, drinking and using drugs. Conley told deputies that he was trying to convince Anderson that he could keep her safe, and the gun fired.
