CASSELBERRY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A man was handcuffed on the side of the road, right in front of his 7- year-old granddaughter, all because he wasn't wearing his glasses while driving. The bottom line is that he broke the law. Benito Pruno spent 6 hours behind bars for his crime.
"It's silly, someone stopping you and arresting you because you don't have your glasses on," he said.
Tuesday afternoon, while he drove his granddaughter home from school, they got stuck in traffic on Winter Park Drive in Casselberry. The car in front of him wanted to make a left hand turn, so he decided to go around him on the right shoulder. A cop saw him make that move, a big no-no.

After the cop pulled him over, Pruno handed over his license and registration. "He said, 'Oh you know, you don't have your glasses on.' I said, 'I just took them off,' cause I can't see with the glasses, close... too close, so I put them down. I said, 'Look I have them right here.'"
The officer said the situation upset Pruno and he started yelling, but he denies that.
"That's when the officer told me to put my hands behind my back and that's when he arrested me. I was shocked and it was an embarrassment cause she (the granddaughter) started crying in the car."
Lt. Ralph Mellon said arresting people for not wearing their glasses happens more often then we think, but added that it is up to the officer in every situation.
"One way or the other, it's technically an arrest. We also have the option of a road side release, but it's still an arrest," says Lt. Mellon.
Pruno believes his arrest is a waste of time -- time he says cops should have spent fighting harder crime in the city.
"Look for the murderers, the rapists and the ones who carry guns all the time... those are the ones that they need to look for."
