A bad case of road rage gets a driver in Volusia County shot
New Smyrna Beach, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - It was around 3:30 Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2009, when 33-year-old Jeremy Wiener was driving along State Road 44 with a friend in his pickup truck. As they passed North Airport Road in New Smyrna Beach, Jeremy's brother Randy says something terrible occurred. "I never thought that could happen to my little brother especially around here, it's such a little town."
According to Randy, a man in a gold pickup truck was headed in the same direction as his brother, "They said he was coming down the road. He said he might have gotten a little close in front of the car, a little too close and the guy got upset I guess and pulled up beside him and shot at him."
A bullet went right through the drivers side door, hitting Jeremy in the abdomen. "They said the door slowed the bullet down so it went in and almost exited this side. You could see where it almost went back out," Randy said.
Jeremy headed to Randy's home, it was right down the street near this produce stand, "He drove down here and pulled in here and said I've been shot call 911. So we called 911." While paramedics transported Jeremy to Halifax Medical Center, deputies spotted the other pickup truck. "He was an older man in his 40's. What was he driving? A gold chevy truck."
Deputies spotted 48-year-old William Alvarado on I-4 near Orange City. Investigators say a handgun and shell casings were found inside his truck. They took him into custody. Alvardo says Jeremy cut him off.
Deputies say, when Alvarado was arrested he complained of chest pains, so they took him to Florida Hospital, before being booked into jail. They're still determining the charges he will face.
Meanwhile Randy wonders how his baby brother's doing. "Worried, waiting on the cops right now because I'm trying to get to the hospital to see him."
