VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A kidnapping hoax that started in Orlando came to end miles away in Volusia County. Orlando Police said a 16 year old girl called 911 from an sport utility vehicle traveling east on Interstate 4.
The girl texted her mother to tell her she was being kidnapped, so her mother instructed her to call 911. When the girl did, Orlando Police said the dispatcher told the girl to speak as if she was speaking with one of her friends to "throw the supposed kidnappers off."
Police said she told them she was in a truck. It turns out she was in an SUV. Police said the teenager also wasn't truthful about her location.
A Lake Mary Police Officer was eventually able to get the driver to pull over along Highway 17/92 in DeBary. When police stopped the SUV, there were 8 teenagers in the car, and that's when police said the girl had admitted that her call for help was all a lie. Police also said the girl didn't want to admit to her mother that she was coming home late.
Each of the children's parents were called to pick them up and instead of being arrested for faking a call to 911, the teenager who originally placed the call to 911 left with her mother. Volusia County Sheriff's deputies couldn't arrest the girl because she didn't commit a violent crime.
The mother of the girl, Sandra Contreras, is lashing out at Orlando Police for accusing her daughter of being a liar. Contreras told Fox 35 News that she knew her daughter was going to be home late. She said her daughter was taken by 3 girls that were at an Orlando teenage night club with her daughter and that the other girls were jealous of her daughter, because her daughter and a friend were talking to some boys that the girls liked.
"They got the story mixed up. My daughter called for help, she did not get the help."
Officers with at least eight law enforcement agencies were involved in the case. Orlando police said they will turn the case over to state prosecutors and hope they will press charges for making a false complaint.
