An injured bald eagle is walking around a Volusia County neighborhood and wildlife experts hope to find it. “We were just coming down the street here and I said honey, look at that there’s a bald eagle,” said Mary Tarrant.
She and her husband took pictures of the eagle but as they stood watching the bald eagle next to the pond at the waters edge subdivision in Port Orange the other night, they noticed something wasn’t right. “He would hobble, like a hobble, hobble, and then flap his wings. Each time he would get like a foot and a half off the ground and then just fell back down again,” said Tarrant.
Tarrant called a bird rescuer but by the time volunteers arrived, the bird went into these woods and hasn’t been seen since. As far as what could have happened to the injured eagle, a volunteer with the Birds of Prey says it could have been any number of things. These eagles are very prone to poisoning. It could have been hit by a car, perhaps even shot or even accidentally hit by fireworks on the 4th of July.
Bald eagles are protected by federal law and are common in Florida. Tarrant and other neighbors say they are going to stay on the look out.
