ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Imagine going to the store, ringing up $100 worth of food and goods, and then spending only ten bucks for it all. It's the constant reality for a Central Florida woman. She's one of the top coupon-ing experts in the country.
"There's many a time when the housework is neglected because I'm coupon-ing," says Tanya Senseney, coupon expert from Lady Lake. "If you don't cut coupons, it's like throwing money away!" she says.
Every month, Tanya saves thousands of dollars. On this Monday morning trip to Kmart, she's taking advantage of the rare super double coupons.
It'll take her at least an hour to shop the aisles, but that's fast, because she's already well-researched. Her savings at the end should be extraordinary.
Tanya calls herself the "Coupon Queenie." And the money-saving magic begins in the west wing of the Coupon Queenie's castle (actually, a medium-sized home).
There you'll find stacks of "extras," heaps of donations and a constant supply closet for herself, her husband, her 3 kids, and her dog. Much of it will be gifted. Like a retro hot-dog roller from CVS. Retailed at $35. Tanya grabbed it after coupon-ing for $1.49.
"You just need the Sunday paper. You need some time, Senseney" says.
Now, she does this full time and even teaches courses on how to save.
Her top 3 tips for you to start saving?
She also says you should pay attention to your sale fliers and what they have on sale, "especially if they have buy-one-get-one free sales, and you have two $1-off coupons. The moneys just there. You just have to pay attention and make a list."
In the stores, she'll carry binder and check her list twice. "I used to spend $200 a trip," says Senseney. That was $200 every week. She's now down to spending only $300 a month.
Check-out can almost take as long as the shopping. "Some people hate coupons. They think it takes too much time when they get in line behind me," she tells us.
It doesn't matter when this happens: a total bill of $457. But after all those coupons, it comes to just $45 dollars!
And there are also two free movie tickets on the receipt.
She went from $457 to $45. "Ninety percent savings, yes!" she says. "Incredible." She says it's her career best.
