Law Students rally in Sanford for Trayvon Martin

Posted: Updated:

Florida members of the Black Law Students Association and other protesters held a rally on Monday morning. The rally that they're calling "Stand for Justice," was held outside the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center in honor of Trayvon Martin.

Martin is the 17-year-old boy who was shot and killed by neighborhood watch worker, George Zimmerman.  Back on February 26, Martin was walking through the Retreat at Twin Lake neighborhood, when he was approached by Zimmerman.

An altercation occured, and according to investigators, Zimmerman fired the deadly shot which took the life of the teen. Zimmerman claimed self defense when questioned by detectives with the Sanford Police Department, and so far he isn't facing charges, so that's why they haven't arrested him.

However, ralliers like the Law Students congregating today, along with the UCF students and Brevard residents who held their own marches this past weekend, they feel justice wasn't served.

The students at Florida A & M University (FAMU) and Florida State University (FSU) students who are rallying in Tallahassee Monday morning said justice was not served.

Before making contact with Martin, Zimmerman called 911 dispatchers to report what he perceived as "suspicious behavior."  The first recording is a non-emergency call placed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who said he shot Martin in an act of self-defense.

His call was placed moments before the shooting. The subsequent seven calls were placed during and after the shooting.

In the meantime, Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett is calling for an independent review by the Department of Justice. "Just review where we stand and what we've done. Make sure everything has been reviewed properly have a third set of eyes on it," he said.

Police Chief Bill Lee didn't want to comment on the release of the recordings on Friday, but has said he conducted a fair investigation.
