Families in Bulger case lose appeal

Posted:

A federal court has refused to hear an appeal from the families of two men allegedly killed by former Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger who were trying to claim an $8.5 million legal award from the federal government.

The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday upheld an earlier decision that ruled the families of Michael Donahue and Edward "Brian" Halloran did not file their claims within the statute of limitations.

Bulger and another member of his gang are alleged to have shot Halloran on the Boston waterfront in 1982. Donahue was an unintended victim who had offered Halloran a ride home.

Bulger was an FBI informant at the time, and a judge in 2009 ordered the government to pay damages to the families after determining that the FBI was responsible for the deaths.
