Audience member Candice asks Dr. Oz if there is something that can be done to avoid contracting H pylori (Helicobacter pylori: a microbial bacterium that colonizes the stomach and has been linked to chronic gastritis, stomach cancer, and duodenal ulcers, but it has also been postulated that it may play a role in natural stomach ecology).
Dr. Oz answers that about 20 years ago, H pylori’s existence wasn’t known, but that it is now a known cause of stomach infections that can be treated.
Dr. Oz explains there are steps that can be taken to keep the stomach generally healthy, and the cancerous effects of H pylori at bay. Dr. Oz has noted before that green tea, broccoli sprouts, garlic, probiotics, and flavonoids help prevent serious H pylori issues. One might get ulcers from the already present H pylori bacterium in their stomach, but the potential of contracting cancer resulting from H pylori is most definitely decreased if they consume these products.
