Ask Dr. Oz Season 2: Post Op #22

Posted:

Audience member Lisa tells Dr. Oz that she has been diagnosed with “lazy stomach” (constant nausea, vomiting, upset stomach) and asks Dr. Oz how she can cure the symptoms.

Dr. Oz asks Lisa is she has been given medications or if she has had surgery. Lisa says that she was prescribed Nexium®, and that she had the Lap-Band® surgery as well.
Dr. Oz responds that he is amazed at the magic functions of our intestines. Dr. Oz states that we have more neurons and nerves in our intestines than we do in our spine, and that 95% of the body’s serotonin is in our stomach!

Dr. Oz further explains that when one has a “lazy stomach”, the intestines are not functioning and moving properly, so the food piles-up. This makes it extremely difficult for the afflicted person to eat normally. Dr. Oz explains that it is also difficult to eat the foods that are good for us after intestine surgery, so it is most important to change one’s diet to maximize eating what is healthy and good for better intestinal function.

Audience member Chantelle tells Dr. Oz that she gave birth two years ago, and after she received her epidural, she has been experiencing lower back pains. Chantelle asks Dr. Oz if there is anything that she can do to help alleviate the pain.

Dr. Oz responds that the epidural is likely not the culprit for the back pain, but that the trauma set on the nerves during the birth is more likely the case.

Dr. Oz recommends that Chantelle see a physical therapist to teach her stretching techniques and exercises, reinforcing the fact that the miracle of birth is a traumatic experience on the body. Dr. Oz encourages Chantelle to learn these techniques and exercises to strengthen and repair her body’s core once again.

Dr. Oz notes that he too has experienced back issues, and that physical therapy has helped him immensely.
