Tech Check: Photo Apps for Smartphones

Posted:

It seems like more people these days are taking pictures with their phones than with cameras. So which apps are the best for your photos?

Have something that catches your eye this summer? Go ahead, take the picture with your smartphone.

You can take amazing photographs. Even edit them later, all right on your smart phone using apps like the free Instagram.

A photo was sent to me by Kelli Goldman. It's a Ferris wheel at the Dogwood Festival. Goldman took it with her smart phone but she used a very inexpensive app to make the photo so much.

That app is Hipstamatic. It turns you smart phone into a1970's plastic point and shoot that takes amazing photos. You can change the lens, you get some free, and have the option to buy more. Each lens gives your photo a different look.

You can even change the film which also alters your pictures.

I took an iPod Touch down the Fox Theater and took some pictures using the Hipstamatic app. The photos look stylized like a 1970s picture. The combination of lens and film gives you a different look and border each time.

Hipstamatic is a favorite of FOX 5 photographers and editors for the quality of the photo and ease of use.

Let me tell you about my favorite app though, Camera Plus. It is the number one selling photo app in the world. Unlike Hipstimatic, Camera Plus allows you to take and then edit your photos afterwards all in the same app.

There a number of photo editing apps and these are great.
.
I used Photoshop Elements to take a picture of FOX 5 studios and then edited the lighting and mood afterwards. Photoshop filters can also make your profile pictures more interesting with the ability to crop and stylize.

I asked on my Facebook page to let me see some of your best smartphone shots, Christine sent a sunset. Sonya, a great portrait.

Hipstamatic and Camera Plus are both $1.99 each. Adobe Photoshop Elements is free.

You can always send me your tech questions at my Facebook page Doug Evans FOX 5 .
