As the leader of the city of Orlando, there's no doubt Mayor Buddy Dyer throws his weight around to ensure the city runs efficiently. But he has literally cut the fat out of government. If you haven't noticed, you now see a slimmer and sleeker mayor these days.
"I've battled with weight pretty much since I left high school, and I'm proud to say that today I weigh a little bit less than when I graduated from high school," Dyer says.
We caught up with the Mayor working out before the sun rise. Mayor Dyer has lost a whopping 35 pounds and has been able to keep the weight off for more than nine months. He went from his peak at 230 pounds to weighing a now svelte 195 pounds. He reflects upon the very moment when he knew it was time for him to get healthier. It was after he returned from a trip to Israel last spring.
"The clothes that I had bought to take on the trip were too tight," Dyer recalls.
Well those days are far behind for the 53-year-old mayor. His waistline dropped from a size 38 to a size 33. He says the secret to his weight loss success is no secret … simply exercise and a healthier diet.
"I am following kind of a modified South Beach Diet, so six smaller portions a day to keep your metabolism going" Mayor Dyer explains. "I cut out any starchy foods and carbs, so no potatoes, no bread, a lot of protein."
"I get up at 5:30 and work out first thing in the morning probably four to five times a week and then I do yoga on the weekends," Dyer says of his workout routine.
And while the Mayor is happy about slimming down and being healthier, he says what truly brings him joy is knowing that he can motivate others.
"It makes me feel good, number one, because I did it and it makes me feel so much healthier," Mayor Dyer says. "But the more rewarding thing is to inspire other people to look at their health and think about their weight."
He's making Orlando think more about their waistlines, but he says, more importantly, he's helping to promote a long-lasting and healthier lifestyle.
