Some call it a death trap. Others say it's a catastrophe waiting to happen. We're talking about the intersection on Citrus Boulevard and Tally Road in Leesburg. According to business owners, it's been the site of dozens of serious accidents.
"It can be very frightening," Travis Adcock describes.
Adcock has worked in this area for more than seven years, and he says within that time, he can recall more than half a dozen major accidents that he's seen with his own eyes.
"So many accidents that have happened here," Adcock says. "Everyone who comes out of this place takes a gamble."
What many say is the reason for this dangerous intersection is based upon those cars coming out of Tally Road and making a left turn to head northbound onto Citrus Boulevard. Many say that middle roadway isn't enough space for traffic to merge onto Citrus Boulevard, a very busy highway.
In fact, the Leesburg Police Department confirms that 37 accidents have occurred here since March of 2008, including a two-car collision that happened last Tuesday. Dale Herman, the assistant manager of a nearby restaurant says he constantly hears horns blaring and tires screeching.
"You just never know what's going to happen," Herman says.
FOX 35 contacted the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to see if a traffic study has ever been conducted. In a statement, a spokesperson says FDOT, "…is certainly willing to conduct a traffic study if there's a safety concern ... however, a traffic signal would not be considered at Tally Rd since it is located approximately 600' from the existing traffic signal. If there is a safety problem related to side street left turns, we would look at the need to restrict this movement."
"Something has to be done," Adcock says. "It doesn't matter what they do at this point as long as something is done."
He's calling for immediate action, and hoping it's done before the next accident at this location turns out to be a fatal one.
Some suggestions business owners say would decrease the danger of the intersection include installing a median in hopes to prevent motorist from making left turns onto Citrus Boulevard.
