Riding a bike for the first time is memorable for any child, but for those who struggle with special needs it can be life changing.

Twelve-year-old Ali Plummer has waited weeks for this day. With a proud mom and a couple of photographers watching, she took her new custom bike for cruise. Born prematurely, Ali struggles with cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder. Riding a regular bike is not an option.

"Her friends would come to the house and they'd walk their bikes so that Ali wouldn't feel left out, which was really sweet of them, but she just wanted to be able to ride to the park at the corner with the rest of the kids on their bikes," said Cheryl Plummer, Ali's mother.

That is exactly what will now happen thanks to the Bike Day program at Beaumont Hospital.

"It feels so awesome because now I can ride with my friends, and I can ride to the park and all kinds of stuff. So, it will be so much fun," Ali Plummer said.

Eleven-year-old Jakob Kimball has a form of muscular dystrophy. He has a hard time standing. This is his first bike.

"Thanks to everybody, sponsors, donators, the hospital, everybody's who's involved in this, thank you very much," said Brian Kimball, Jakob's father.

Jakob and Ali are just two of dozens of kids who will now feel new freedom thanks to Bike Day. The bikes donated to the families are worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars, but really they are priceless.

It is always hard to tell who is happier on this day, the kids or the parents.

"I am so proud of her and so grateful really to everybody. So, it just is nice that she's going to have a summer feeling more like a normal kid," Cheryl Plummer said.

Bike Day happens once a year at Beaumont with children in their rehab program. It is funded partially by Children's Miracle Network.
