Soup Playing a Role in Redefining Detroit

Posted:

Like most projects, this one costs money. Edward Hardy, Junior and Dejanique Williams are students at University Prep Science and Math High School in Detroit. They're building an urban garden.

"If you just grow it and don't eat it, you don't get the full story of where the food comes from," said Alison Heeres, who is working with the students.

That's why the students want to build a mobile kitchen inside their school, but they need a little help paying for it.

That's where a soup dinner comes in to play. It's a monthly event called Soup at Spaulding. $5 gets you unlimited soup and a chance to help your neighbors turn their vision into a reality.

"People then get to voice what it is that they're working on," Heeres said.

And the community chooses which project will bring the most value. At the end of the night, there's a vote.

A portion of the dinner's proceeds go to restoring Spaulding Court, a once dilapidated building in Corktown that's being completely restored by people who live and work in the neighborhood.

The rest of the money goes to the evening's winner. This time, the prize went to Edward and Dejanique.

"They do this because they know it's fundamental to us coming together and solving problems," said Heeres.

Inspiring hope one dinner at a time.

"I think it's a number one priority for me to stay here and put it on the top of my list to make a comeback for Detroit. I don't want to see my city fall," Hardy said.

The next Soup at Spaulding will be held Thursday night at Spaulding Court. They are also plenty of other organizations that are holding similar soup dinners.
