MnDOT's spot inspections park 3 party buses

Posted: Updated:

Last weekend was a popular weekend for spring formals -- and commercial vehicle inspections too, since transportation officials were focused on party limos. At least three vehicles were pulled off the road immediately, and MnDOT says those safety checks keep passengers safe.

While the majority of vehicles that were inspected had no problems, a few others weren't so lucky. Over the weekend, inspectors with the Minnesota Department of Transportation performed 19 random checks.

"The issue is about safety, and we're out there making sure that these vehicles are safe," said Kevin Gutknecht.

In those 19 inspections, seven vehicles were cited with a total of 17 separate violations that ranged from failing to display Department of Transportation numbers to having coolers blocking aisles.

"It starts with checking the paperwork -- the certifications, license, the driver's health card," explained Gutknecht.

Next is the "walk around," which is a visual inspection that can take between 30 and 45 minutes. If they start to see problems, they start looking closer.

Of the three vehicles that were taken off the road, two were found to have defective parking breaks and another was written up for operating with a defective emergency door that wouldn't open.

In most cases, inspectors do stop the commercial vehicles after they have completed their routes -- but anyone with safety concerns can call MnDOT's Commercial Vehicle Center at 651-215-6330.
