FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Cipriano Classic was really a grassroots effort.  People registered from as far away as Colorado and Texas, so there's no doubt this event was a huge success.

"It's a community effort to honor the Ciprianos and their athleticism and their love of sports," said race co-director April Tini.

"It was a great experience," said Dr. Tom Josino.  "To be with all these people here was a wonderful day."

The Cipriano Classic 5K Fun Run and Walk exceeded expectations by more than 1,000. Almost 2,100 people showed up for a good cause.  Video from SkyFox shows runners from several nearby communities lacing up their running shoes to show support.

Runners got free massages when they crossed the finish line.  The deejay kept the kids dancing.  Their faces were happy, but their hearts heavy.

"It was a pretty tragic thing that happened, so it's good that we can come out here and support them," said participant Phillip Josino.

"It was awesome," said Chad Hoffman.  "Sometimes I ran, sometimes I walked because it was getting kind of tiring, but it was fun, though.  I saw like Tanner and all of his friends. They're really cool. I'm here to support Tanner because Tanner's my good friend.  I like him."

The proceeds from the charity event will be donated to the Cipriano children.

A lot of people were wearing white.  That was no accident.  White is the color that signifies hope, and organizers were hoping for healing and for love to conquer all.
