DETROIT (WJBK) -
Lawmakers in Lansing Wednesday approved a bill blocking the governor from using any taxpayer money for a proposed bridge over to Canada. Still, Governor Rick Snyder has met with Canadian leaders and is expected to announce we're ready to build. Meanwhile, we got reaction from neighbors who will be most effected.
Everyone we spoke with in Detroit's Delray neighborhood expects the new bridge to come squarely through their community forcing them to move somewhere else. Some are excited about it, others not so much.
"I don't like to have to wait for all the trucks. It's like being at a truck stop just driving to work everyday," said Delray resident Bryce Anderson.
The governor is moving forward with plans for a second bridge to Canada in southwest Detroit, the place Rebecca Angeles and her family are proud to call home.
"My family, we're going to start remodeling my house," she said. "The roof needs to be knocked down. We're cutting down the little weeds and stuff around the gate."
However, a new bridge will mean the Angeles family will have to find a new home and a new neighborhood.
"I honestly don't want the bridge coming through here. I think it's a waste of money."
On the other hand, Anderson, her neighbor, says for his family a new bridge could bring a new opportunity.
"We want to get whatever they're purchasing our house for and we're going to open up our own restaurant," he said. "I built the house from scratch."
But he is willing to let that go.
"We're waiting on the trucks. The trucks, there's a line of them waiting to get on the bridge over there."
Plenty in this community feel the same way.
"I want to move, get out of this area," another resident told us.
We still don't know how much residents will get for their homes. Political insiders expect the plan to be a challenged in court, so don't expect a groundbreaking anytime soon.
"If they ask me to move, there would be no other choice [but] to move because they're going to knock it down either/or," said Angeles.
"We're ready for it to happen," said Anderson.
The governor was not saying much about this on Wednesday, but a formal announcement is scheduled for Friday.
