New ways to fight mosquitoes

Posted: Updated:

It's peak season for a hated Minnesota pest. Mosquitoes are everywhere in the metro right now, but it doesn't mean you have to be a target.

New products to repel mosquitoes are on store shelves this year, including a "bug band" to wear on your wrist. There's also a smart phone app you can download for free, that claims to repel mosquitoes with a buzzing sound.

This year, people told FOX 9 they would try just about anything to keep the bugs away.

Risa Boyce told us she'd love to try to the new smart phone app. The noise gets mixed reviews from other users, though. They say the high pitched buzzing could be bothersome.

Experts say although the app is entertaining, it's not effective.

Metro Mosquito Control District's Mike McLean told FOX 9, there's no scientific evidence to show the app would actually work. McLean says other new products might be a better bet.

When it comes to products claiming to be "all natural", McLean says to look for "oil of lemon eucalyptus" or "lemongrass". As for those clip on fans, McLean says they're effective for use in the backyard, but it's not as effective if it's windy outside. McLean still recommends insect repellent containing DEET. "Anything with DEET really does work," said McLean.
