Drowning victim recovered from Lake Minnetonka

Posted: Updated:

The body of a 20-year-old Minnetonka man has been recovered from Lake Minnetonka.

Family members told FOX 9 News that Kennedy Maddox has been missing since 4:30 p.m. after he jumped off of a boat to swim in the lake. Four others who were on the boat with him were unable to locate him.

Maddox's body was located about a mile off of Big Island in 67 feet of water using sonar equipment.

Members of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Dive Team recovered the body at 6:20 p.m.

Maddox's mother said her son, who recently graduated from Minnetonka High School and had a scholarship to continue his education, did know how to swim, but he was not wearing a life jacket when he jumped in the water to cool down.

Students from the school who are grieving their classmate told FOX 9 News they learned an unfortunate lesson from Maddox's death about water safety.

Administrators say Maddox was a true leader who always wore a big smile -- and he had a big impact on the student body. In fact, his fellow choir members painted the school rock with messages for him.

Sadly, the students are also dealing with the deaths of two other recent graduates as well.
