DETROIT (WJBK) -
A total of 325,000 homes and businesses lost power in this week's string of storms. Powerful winds knocked down more than a thousand power lines Thursday morning alone. Falling trees and direct lightning strikes also caused major damage.
All available repair crews are working non-stop to get everyone back online, but as of Friday morning, DTE Energy says around 105,000 customers are still without electricity.
Friday's forecast calls for temperatures to hit or surpass 100 degrees around metro Detroit. DTE says its crews are working 16-hour shifts, but it could be until Saturday or Sunday before all residents are back online.
Melanie Kaplan lives on Bacon Street in Berkley north of Twelve Mile and has no power.
"We were sleeping and my son came running upstairs scared because the beeping started going off [from the smoke alarm]," said Kaplan. "It ended up the power went out."
Her son grabbed a flashlight. Hunter, 9, has been helping everyone find their way in the dark house.
Hunter's turtle is doing fine for now, but mom told him and his sister, Riley, that DTE Energy is forecasting Saturday before power will be restored.
"DTE, they said it was busy. They didn't know when it was going to go on, and now we're finding out that it's not going to go on until Saturday evening between 10:00 and 12:00," Kaplan explained. "It's a horrible experience, and that's why we have been calling around trying to run a generator and everybody's sold out, so now we're trying to find a hotel room and everybody's sold out."
Generators are humming across metro Detroit, that is if you can find one, and refrigerators without generators, well, they've become warm closets.
"I was just talking to my sister that lives north of here, and she's like, 'Bring it all on over. We'll have a barbecue.' So, at least it won't go to waste," said Nancy Maraldo.
Power was actually restored to Bacon Street a little after 9:00 p.m. Thursday.
