Police: SUV hit, killed teen at summer school

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

FOX 9 News has confirmed that a girl taking summer school classes at Harding High School was hit and killed by an SUV on Thursday as she waited for the school bus.

Witnesses told FOX 9 News the 16-year-old tenth-grader had been sitting in the shade with her boyfriend by the school sign away from the road when the vehicle careened into her.

Police were called to the intersection just after 1 p.m., and they found 16-year-old Clarisse Grime near the bottom of the embankment. She died at the scene.

Officers say 17-year-old Eduardo Vazquez-Torres had been standing near Grime and was also struck, but he was conscious and walking when police arrived. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Regions Hospital.

Officers say the driver, 50-year-old Carlos Viveros-Colorado, apparently missed a corner while trying to turn from 3rd Street onto Hazelwood Street. His vehicle jumped a curb, struck a fire hydrant and then crossed the intersection, struck a sign and continued 50 feet down an embankment before hitting Grime.

Herb Colby said he ran to try and offer aid, but could only watch helplessly as the girl died while waiting for emergency responders.

"I've been thinking about them all day," Colby said of the victims. "Poor girl was breathing. I was talking to her -- it was like she was responding to my voice."

Neighbors in the area told FOX 9 News they have feared a crash like this would happen someday because drivers frequently speed in the area.

Viveros-Colorado, who was speeding at the time of the crash, did not leave the scene and is cooperating with authorities. He is currently behind held on suspicion of criminal vehicular operation.
