Swimmers brave the Detroit River to help sink cancer

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Hundreds of swimmers are going the distance in the Detroit River on Wednesday, making their way through the water for a good cause. The 13th Annual Motor City Mile Swim Race Competition benefits the Lance Armstrong LiveStrong Foundation and took place on Belle Isle Beach.

The 5k swim, one-mile swim, half-mile swim and lifeguard only swim included more than 500 swimmers and 100 volunteers.

The Detroit Yacht Club helped provide the safety vessels for the event. The Motor City Mile began in the summer of 2000 and included 30 swimmers but has now grown dramatically into what's being called the largest Open Water Swim for Charity in the Midwest.
