Mankato pub puts pregnancy test dispenser in bathroom

Posted: Updated:
MANKATO, Minn. -

Most people wouldn't expect to find a pregnancy test inside a public restroom at a bar, but that's exactly what's happening in Mankato because a Minnesota-based non profit is wants to reach out to women who could be pregnant in the hopes that they will think before they drink.

It's only been up for a day -- and the owner of Pub 500 said he expected it to shock people, but the test dispenser is already a big topic of conversation.

Healthy Brains for Children, the group behind the offering, claims the machine is the first of its kind -- and they were planning on pushing the envelope with it. Their intended result: Change the thinking patterns associated with responsible drinking."

As a former teacher, Jody Allen Crowe says he's seen enough of the devastation caused by fetal alcohol syndrome. That's why he's asking women who may be pregnant to "think before they drink."

Crowe is a regular at the pub, where the owner stands by the mission.

"I think, if you've got a chance to solve a problem that's actually 100 percent preventable in any way, shape or form, I'm all for it," the owner said.

The creators wanted to make the dispenser easy to use, so no cash is needed. Just swipe a credit card and pull out one of the $3 tests.

While customers aren't sure that women will actually use the test in the restroom at the bar, they hope the campaign can make a difference -- especially since the CDC estimates that one in 13 women drink alcohol while pregnant.

Healthy Brains for children plans to use the money raised by the dispensers to put up more of them across the U.S.
