Homemade dog treats were among the items sold at the picnic for people and pups. Plus dogs on the grill, dogs wearing dresses, even dogs taking a dip. It was truly a dog day afternoon at Serenity Animal Hospital in Sterling Heights where a "rescue roundup" was held to thank people who've adopted dozens of rescue dogs.
"We've been doing animal adoptions for over 20 years," said adoption manager Devan Johnson. "We decided to have a picnic to just say thank you to everyone who's adopted pets from us."
Back in April Fox 2 told you about a situation in Allegan County where 350 dogs were confiscated from a pet hoarder living in an 1,100 square foot home. Serenity rescued 22 of those dogs and found homes for all of them. The animals also got much needed medical care.
"Our adoption fee is $250," Johnson explained. "All of our dogs are spayed or neutered, micro chipped, they come with six months of heartworm preventative, and they've had their vaccines."
Several of the Allegan County dogs and their owners attended the Saturday event.
"It's so nice to see all the dogs back," said Dr. Karen Michelski. "This isn't all of them but it's just so nice to see them back and see them so happy and the people are so happy."
"Rescue dogs are awesome," added adoptive "parent" Kim Martin. "Their hearts are so big and they're just looking for a home."
