Colorado tragedy impacts Hollywood, Mariah Carey comes to 'American Idol'

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The impact of the Colorado shooting tragedy at "The Dark Knight Rises" opening last week continues to have an impact on Hollywood.

While conversations are ongoing about the effect of big screen violence on audiences, most people I've spoken with say, it's unlikely much will change in the world of making movies and TV shows.

That said, Warner Bros. - who has done all the "Batman" films - has pulled the trailer for the upcoming film "Gangster Squad." The trailer shows mobsters shooting up a movie theater.

There's talk of re-cutting certain scenes, and perhaps even pushing back the scheduled Sept. 7 opening day.

"Gangster Squad" is expected to garner a lot of 2012 awards consideration, so the studio still wants to release the movie - starring Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone - before the end of the year.

Warner Bros. also has made a commitment to Colorado Gov. Hickenlooper that it will contribute a "very substantial amount" to a fund to benefit the victims of the Aurora, Colorado shootings, channeling the money through the non-profit Giving First.

Mariah Carey's arrival as a new "American Idol" judge has been widely anticipated. Now that it's official, here's some behind-the-scenes scoop.

Mariah's manager Randy Jackson has long been campaigning for her to sign on as a judge. He thought she did such a great job as a mentor on last season's show, that she should have more of a role on the show.

He also knows she will be a great performer on "Idol" – she isn't shy about sharing her thoughts about talent.

Besides the reported $12 million contract, Carey also loved the idea of getting a bit more "stability" in her home life, allowing her to spend more time with her young twins and husband Nick Cannon.

Some of the show staffers are a bit concerned, hoping the "diva" behavior Carey exhibited while a mentor last year won't be repeated - or get worse - now that she's on the main judging panel.

While Ashton Kutcher and his former "That '70s Show" co-star Mila Kunis continue to deny they are romantically involved, the duo and long described "just good friends" have been acting more like a couple lately.

The two have been seen kissing and acting very romantic all over Hollywood, including at the wrap party for Kutcher's "Jobs" film.

Robin Williams and James Marsden have been tapped to play former U.S. presidents in an upcoming film.

Williams will portray Dwight Eisenhower, and Marsden has just stepped in (replacing Matthew McConaughey) as President Kennedy in "The Butler."

Lee Daniels directs the film about the late Eugene Allen. Allen served at the White House for more than three decades, rising from a pantry assistant in the kitchen to become the head butler - the maitre 'd – who is the highest-ranking person on the household staff serving the first family at the White House. Allen passed away in 2010.

Daniels has attracted a high-profile cast for his movie: Oscar winner Forest Whitaker will play Allen, Oprah Winfrey will play his wife, John Cusack will be Richard Nixon, Alan Rickman will play Ronald Reagan and Jane Fonda will portray Nancy Reagan. Minka Kelly has been cast at Jackie Kennedy. Other cast members will include Vanessa Redgrave, Terrence Howard and Lenny Kravitz.

In other movie news, Jennifer Hudson will star with Anthony Mackie, Jordin Sparks and Jeffrey Wright in "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete," produced by Chicago's own Robert Teitel and George Tillman Jr's State Street Pictures.

Tillman will direct. Alicia Keys is also on board as an executive producer of the movie, which is about two inner city kids who find themselves on their own for a summer - after their mothers are incarcerated.

Also sounds like Prince Harry has a new girlfriend, who is also a member of a very old noble British family. She's model Cressida Bonas. Let's see how long this one lasts.

Interestingly, she looks a lot like Harry's longtime love, Chelsy Davy.
