There was no question about it. It was a hot and steamy July for not only Chicago, but for Rockford as well.
The average high temperature for Chicago in July was 91.5 degrees which is 7.4 degrees above normal. The average low temperature was 70.6 degrees which is 6.7 degrees above normal. The average temperature for the entire month was 81.1 degrees which is 7.1 degrees above normal. This makes July of 2012 the 3rd warmest on record since 1871.
In terms of rainfall, 3.66" fell which is only .06" below normal. Most of this came down during the last two weeks of July. We needed it. Bigtime!
The month of July produced 5 records. We hit 102 on July 4th which tied the record set in 1911. The second record high came on July 5th when the mercury climbed to 103 breaking the old record of 102 set back in 1911. Another record was broken on the 6th as the high temperature reached 103 shattering the old record of 99 set back in 1988 and 1874.
We also broke some records in terms of warmest overnight low temperatures or what we call "record high minimum temperatures." The morning of July 6th produced a low of only 82 degrees which broke the old record of 80 set back in 1977. The morning of July 23rd saw its 5th record of the month as the low temperatures dropped to 81 degrees breaking the old record of 78 set in 1965.
At Rockford, the average high temperature was 92.8 degrees which is 8.3 degrees above normal. The average low temperature was 68.8 degrees which is 5.8 degrees above normal.
The average temperature for the entire month was 80.8 degrees which is 7.0 degrees above normal making this July in Rockford the warmest July on record since 1905. 2.68" of rain fell which is 1.27" below normal.
The month of July produced a whopping 9 records at Rockford including the warmest ever.
Rockford saw 5 days of record high temperatures. Back to back to back record highs on July 4, 5, and 6 when the mercury hit 102, 102, & 104 degrees.
July 3, 6, and 23 saw 3 records of warmest overnight low temperatures.
August is also forecasted to be warmer and drier than normal according the NOAA Climate Prediction Center.
