DETROIT (WJBK) -
Metro Detroit gas prices hovered around $4 a gallon Friday morning as a pipeline shutdown in Wisconsin and problems at three Midwestern refineries continued to take a poll on consumer's wallets.
According to GasBuddy.com, the average price of regular unleaded gas in Detroit last Friday was $3.63 a gallon as compared to this morning's $4. Premium unleaded prices were as high of $4.29 a gallon. Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com, says Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky are feeling the most pain at the pump from the refinery issues. The Wisconsin pipeline which delivers crude oil from Canada to Chicago had to be shut down this week.
DeHaan says the increase in Midwest prices has pulled up the national average by almost 3 cents a gallon to $3.57.
"We need to start car pooling," said motorist Keith Jackson. "They'll have to do something then."
DeHaan says the price spike is the largest single-day increase since August of last year.
He expects prices to decrease beginning next month when the majority of the U.S. switches back over to cheaper and more simple winter gasoline, a blend that costs less to produce, just in time for the yearly expiration of the EPA's clean burning gasoline laws.
