DETROIT (WJBK) -
Dominique Lauderdale was involved in the fight that led to the shooting of a three-year-old girl. It happened Tuesday on Cardoni Street near State Fair on Detroit's east side.
A source told Fox 2 it started when Lauderdale's brother started badmouthing girls three and nine years old. The children's father didn't like it and a fight broke out.
The mother tried to take her two girls and get away in a white van, but we're told Lauderdale's brother kicked in the door of a house down the street, grabbed a 12 gauge shotgun from a friend and started firing at the van. A buckshot struck three-year-old Amyria Parham in the arm, chest and leg.
"All you heard [were] gunshots, and we don't know where it came from. We [were] trying to find my brother, couldn't find him, and still haven't found him or the guys," said Lauderdale.
Police are searching for the 20-year-old, who fled the scene. The white van is now considered evidence. It's at Children's Hospital where the little girl is said to be in stable condition.
"A body that small taking a gunshot. It's reprehensible. It should not happen, but we will find the individual that's done it. We've got a tentative identification of who's done it, and my folks are out searching for that person now," said Police Chief Ralph Godbee.
The shooting happened a stone's throw away from the Barksdale Funeral Home. Ira Benson inside working at the time remembers hearing the two gunshots. She was heartbroken to learn one struck a three-year-old girl.
"It's tragic. It's really tragic. It's a sad commentary of what's going on in society."
