Detroit off-duty officer helps nab criminal family of 5

An off-duty Detroit police officer risked his own life to help track down a criminal family of five accused of robbing and shooting a man on the city's west side.

Chief Ralph Godbee
says on Aug. 1 a 41-year-old man cut through an alley near Indiana and Wisconsin streets on his way home when he ran into the Tara Sullivan, her three sons and her nephew.

Godbee says they told the victim he was going to be robbed and then all five fired shots. The victim was hit twice, but he is expected to fully recover.

The off-duty officer heard the shots and followed the assailants in his own car. "He was able to follow them to give out great directions," said Godbee. "He conveyed to the officers what kind of danger they were facing because he just witnessed these individuals shoot someone and attempt to rob someone."

All five were eventually arrested after a traffic stop. Godbee says a bag of guns was found in the vehicle.

Sullivan, along with her 16-year-old son whose name was not released, 21-year-old son Deontay, 23-year-old son Eric and 20-year-old nephew Diontai Manier all face charges of assault with intent to murder.
