DULUTH, Minn. (KMSP) -

Duluth police are looking into an incident at a rest stop off Interstate 35 involving state Rep. Kerry Gauthier.

According to State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske, a witness approached a trooper at the Thompson Hill rest area off I-35 around 11 p.m. on the evening of July 22 to report some "suspicious activity."

Roeske said the trooper made contact with Rep. Gauthier and turned the investigation over to Duluth police because it was a non-traffic incident.

"I think it's a private matter and I don't need to talk about it," Gauthier told the Duluth News Tribune.

Duluth police said the matter is still being actively investigated, though no additional details were released. Gauthier said no one has told him the incident is part of an active criminal investigation.

Gauthier, a Democrat, had no opposition in Tuesday's primary but will face Republican Travis Silvers in the November election.
