PLEASANT RIDGE, Mich. (WJBK) -
A white Taurus facing the wrong way on Woodward was a suspected bank robber's getaway car. Police say he crashed it in Pleasant Ridge trying to run from police after robbing a Chase Bank a few miles north in Huntington Woods.
The suspect got a ride back up Woodward in an ambulance after he was shot by officers and rushed to the hospital.
"He actually spun out on his own. He exited the vehicle, ran through the garden area there, across through the bushes into the front yard where shots were fired," said Huntington Woods Deputy Police Chief Nick Arnold.
Witnesses told Fox 2 the suspect was middle-aged white man. They said he extended his arm in the direction of officers before the shots rang out.
"The police were running out there with their guns, and then I heard pop, pop, pop, pop," said witness Vince Gainor.
"There were, I'm guessing, about seven shots fired because that's what it sounded like to me when I recounted in my mind afterwards how many I had heard," said Mary Dean Campsie.
Police told us the suspect did have money on him from the robbery. It's not clear if he was armed. The Oakland County Sheriff's Department is now investigating the shooting.
We're told the suspect was shot three times and is in stable condition after surgery. He is expected to survive.
Police told us an alert Chase Bank customer actually followed the suspected getaway car and called 911.
Officers from several neighboring communities were involved in the chase.
