Officer O'Rourke's wife thanks the community for their love

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

Officer Patrick O'Rourke was a twelve year veteran of the West Bloomfield Police Department.  The husband and father of four is being remembered as a hero.

Patrick was the youngest of four boys and the father of four amazing kids, three young girls and an eight-month-old son.  His wife of 14 years, Amy, is turning to faith and love to see them through.

"I loved Patty so much.  I do love Patty so much.  He's my best friend, and I'm just waiting him to pull up the driveway.  I know he won't," she said.

Amy O'Rourke found the courage to speak with us briefly.  Holding her youngest son, she wanted to share her gratitude to the community for lifting her up in these dark hours.

"I want to just thank everyone for their love.  I feel their love very much," she said.

Patrick, Amy and their four young kids recently returned from a ten day vacation to Disney World.  Sunday night, he had been back on duty for about a week wrapping up his shift when the call came in.

"He was back at the station ready to go home and the call came in and out he went again.  That's just how he was.  He always had time for one more call, and that was his last call," said brother Dan O'Rourke.

Family members watched the standoff on Forest Edge drag on hour after hour.  They knew other officers lives were still in danger.  In their moments of grief and anger, Amy's faith shined through.

"There were a lot of very religious people today that were praying for SWAT team sharp shooters.  Amy was praying for this guy to get out alive, and that's just Amy," Dan O'Rourke explained.

With the standoff over, Patrick's family can now focus on mourning his death and honoring his memory so it never fades from the hearts of those he cherished the most.

"Stephen, the baby, unfortunately won't know his dad, but that's what the uncles are for, and he's got a lot of uncles that will never let him forget about (his) dad," Dan O'Rourke said.

Visitation for Patrick O'Rourke is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Elton Black and Son Funeral Home in Highland, located at 3295 East Highland Road.  His funeral will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's Catholic Church in Fenton, located at 600 North Adelaide.
