A Cobb County man says he is devastated after a police officer shot and killed his dog. The officer, who was responding to a burglary call, said the dog was barking in an aggressive manner and coming at him.
Cobb County police say they came out to Robby King's home on Sunday after his security alarm went off. King said that he forgot the password to cancel the call.
When officers got here, they went to the back of the house, found an unlocked door and came inside.
King said that he heard his chocolate Labrador retriever, Luke, bark and then heard gunshots.
"I said, ‘Oh God, please don't shoot my dog,' and then he was already laying there dead," said King.
Cobb County police say the officer told them that he thought the dog was coming at him aggressively. They say officers are trained to stop aggressive behavior whether it's coming from a person or a dog.
"I just know my baby was laying there in the grass bleeding, and I had to hold him while he took his last breaths and the officer had no apologies about it," said King. "Maybe he was scared of dogs, maybe he didn't like dogs, I don't know."
Police say the officer followed proper protocol and did not violate any policies or procedures.
King, however, plans to file a complaint.
"I'm never going to get past this. I mean, this is life-changing for me. I know it may sound stupid or funny – people think it's just a dog, but it wasn't. That dog was my partner, my buddy, my best friend," said King.
Cobb County police would not do an interview about this case, but said they are finished with their investigation.
