United Flight 15 was already in the air and headed for Newark when a passenger realized she had left a gun in her hand bag that went unchecked by screeners with the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) at Orlando International Airport.
The woman, a 37-year-old Orlando-area firefighter, is licensed to carry her .380 caliber Ruger. She did not tell anyone on the plane about the weapon during the flight, which left OIA at 8:19 a.m. When she arrived in Newark around 10:30 a.m., she reported the gun to Port Authority officers.
A Port Authority officer took possession of the handgun and unloaded it, making sure it was safe to carry. The Port Authority contacted the Essex County prosecutor who declined to press charges because, "she self-reported the incident."
