Nassau County cop critically hurt in collision

A Nassau County police officer who was monitoring the speed of cars on the Nassau Expressway was hit by a car at about 11:30 a.m.

The 57-year-old officer, who has been with the department for decades, was struck just north of the Atlantic Beach Bridge.

The driver stopped after the accident and waited for help to arrive.

A Nassau police helicopter airlifted the officer the hospital and taken into surgery. He suffered a fractured skull, fractured pelvis, fractured right leg, and massive internal bleeding, police said.

At this time, the police department has not filed charges against the driver, who had two passengers, a woman and a boy.

Police impounded the car, a 2004 Audi, for a safety inspection.

The expressway was closed in both directions for some time.
