SARASOTA, Fla. (WTVT FOX 13 TAMPA) -- All southbound lanes of Interstate 75 are closed in southern Manatee County after a mega-crash involving up to 50 vehicles.
Florida Highway Patrol confirms 30 to 50 vehicles were involved in a crash in the southbound lanes of I-75 on the overpass at University Parkway, on the Manatee-Sarasota county line.
At least one person was injured badly enough to be flown from the scene. There are at least two other people stuck in their vehicles. FHP says it knows of 10 to 12 injuries in all.
There is possibly a tanker leaking liquid calcium, FHP says, which is not considered hazardous. Southbound traffic is being diverted onto University Parkway and then allowed to re-enter the interstate on the other side of the overpass. But drivers should avoid the interstate if possible; estimates I-75 will be closed for three or more hours.
