Suffolk County Police are investigating the death of a woman on Long Island after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver early Sunday morning.
Police say a driver saw 30-year-old Jennifer Wheeler of North Lindenhurst leaning against the center median by the westbound lane on the Sunrise Highway in West Babylon around 1:42 a.m.
The driver told police he turned around to check on her condition as other motorists had stopped to check on Wheeler, who was left lying on the roadside.
Wheeler was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives believe Wheeler was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene.
Authorities said they have no witnesses to this incident or any information regarding the type of vehicle that struck Wheeler.
