Suffolk County Police found another alligator abandoned early Sunday morning on Eastern Long Island for the fifth time in the last nine days.
Authorities say the three-foot long American alligator was found inside of a plastic tub in the parking lot of an Applebee's restaurant at Montauk Highway and William Floyd Parkway in Shirley around 2:00 a.m.
The other alligators were found in Mastic Beach, Wading River and Baldwin.
The gator found in Shirley was immediately taken to the Selden Animal Hospital. The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said alligators cannot survive in cold weather.
The Suffolk County SPCA is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction on this latest incident. They said the reason for offering the reward in this case is because the alligator was found right outside a restaurant and placed people and children in danger.
The SPCA said whoever is responsible for this abandonment will face serious criminal charges.
