Five alligators have been found roaming around or abandoned on Long Island in the span of 10 days, prompting the Suffolk County SPCA to offer a reward for information in the latest case.

The three-foot alligator was found inside a plastic container left in a shopping center on the Montauk Highway over the weekend.

Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross said the alligator was found in a high-traffic area, close to shops and an Applebee's restaurant.

The chief said alligators cannot survive the cold weather.

The SPCA is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever abandoned the latest reptile.

Two other alligators have been found in Suffolk Count and two in Nassau.

Officials believe the alligators were kept as pets and abandoned when they grew too big.
